چکیده

A measurement system is presented that allows large aperture measurements with a high angular resolution and that is still compact and thus convenient for portable use. Theoretical considerations show that a cardioid microphone characteristic is desireable to achieve a low amplification of sensor noise throughout the audio frequency range. The directivity of real cardioid microphones, however, deviates from the ideal cardioid pattern. Here, it is demonstrated how the use of one omnidirectional and one figure-of-eight microphone offers the possibility to optimize the directivity pattern of a virtual cardioid microphone through suitably designed compensation filters.

Optimal 3D Beamforming Using Measured Microphone Directivity Patterns

The design of time-invariant beamformers is often posed as an optimization problem using practical design constraints. In many scenarios it is sufficient to assume that the microphones have an omnidirectional directivity pattern, a flat frequency response in the range of interest, and a 2D environment in which wavefronts propagate as a function of azimuth angle only. In this paper we consider a...

Design of a Coincident Microphone Array for 5.1-Channel Audio Recording Using the Mid-Side Recording Technique

In this paper, a 5.1-channel audio recording method is proposed by applying the mid-side (MS) stereo recording technique to a coincident microphone array. The coincident microphone array consists of a backward-facing cardioid microphone and the MS microphone array which is composed of a pair of forward-facing cardioid and sideways-facing figure-eight microphones. These 3 microphones produce two...

Beamforming using a spherical microphone array based on legacy microphone characteristics

This paper presents a numerical approach that projects frequency-dependent directivity patterns of classic recording microphones onto steerable beams created with a spherical microphone array. In an anechoic chamber, the spatial and timbral characteristics of a legacy recording microphone and the characteristics of a 120-channel spherical microphone array were measured. Using a least-square mat...

A New Comprehensive Approach of Surround Sound Recording

Many techniques have been developed concerning surround sound recording and the issue has turned out to be a challenge without a comprehensive theory. This paper presents an approach based on a full 3D acoustic field theory and the use of a 3D microphone array. Our research work has lead to a new spatial digital processing technique which allows the use of freely positioned capsules of any type...

The effects of non-cardioid directivity on incidence angle estimation using the polar energy time curve.

Assessment of desirable reflections and control of undesirable reflections in rooms are best accomplished if the reflecting surfaces are properly localized. Several measurement techniques exist to identify the incident direction of reflected sound, including the useful polar energy time curve (Polar ETC), which requires six cardioid impulse response measurements along the Cartesian axes. The pu...
